Bill was the first owner of THE SIGN and now he’s happily retired – leaving the day-to-day operations to daughter Bonnie and her husband Paul de Merlis.  Bonnie tells young entrepreneurs to think carefully before choosing a name for their business. She recalls teasing her father, “The Sign of the Skier doesn’t exactly scream Garden Furniture!” But in 1970, Bill and his wife built a pool in the family backyard. Shirley ordered garden furniture from one of the major department stores. “That’s when Dad realized there was an opportunity for The Sign to stock good quality chaise lounges and chairs in the summer months. He knew if he and mom needed some, our customers would too.”
